Game Fishing:
- Bill Fish: all through the hotter months of the year, November to May, game fishing is great on the Sunshine Coast. Juvenile Black Marlin and Sailfish come in numbers during this period. Various methods are used to catch these target species, including; trawling lures and/or dead bait as well as drifting live bait.
- Tuna: generally showing up in large schools especially Long tail Tuna. The most common size caught are 8-12 kilos but there are larger ones amongst them. Yellow fin tuna seem to be caught earlier in the season between November and December. Schools of juveniles of 6-8 kilos are most common, but there is always a chance to pick up a fish of 20-30 kilo.
- Mackerel: spotted mackerel, also usually arrive in large schools, it is not uncommon to catch 10 or more fish in a session, the average size is 3-6 kilo. Spanish mackerel, one of my favourite fish, can be caught as early as November but they are usually smaller, approx 8-12 kilo. As the water gets warmer bigger fish can be caught as late as June. usually larger females. My personal record is 27 kilo but they do grow much bigger, up to 30 kilo plus.
- Wahoo: another speed freak but not as common as Mackerel and more often found on the wider grounds and outer reefs. It is more commonly caught as a by catch while trolling for Billfish.
- Mahi Mahi (Dolphin Fish): one of the prettiest fish in the ocean from bright yellow to green they are almost fluorescent. Spectacular to catch as they always provide a great arial display and are one of the best eating fish. All of the above species are good targets for the salt water fly fisherman, particularly the Tuna.

Reef Fishing:
- It is very rare to come away empty handed as our reefs hold a large variety of species. Probably the most prized catch for the reef fisherman is the Snapper, and the most known to the Southern angler.
- Most commonly caught in the winter months from April to October but are available year round. The average size is 1-3 kilo but 3-8 kilo are often caught even the odd 10 kilo
- Reef fishing is very productive all year round.
- Other species to be targeted are; Sweet Lip, Moses Perch, Venus Tusk Fish, Drag Jew and Jew Fish (Mulloway), Maori Cod, Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Scarlet Sea, Perch, Pearl Perch, and many more.
- Some of these species depend on currents, so different species are more common at different times of the year.
