Hobart is the capital of Australia's largest island, Tasmania, affectionately known as the Apple Isle. It is located in the south-east of the state at the foot of the majestic Mount Wellington and on the banks of the mighty River Derwent. With its origins as one of Australia's earliest and largest colonies for British and Irish convicts, it contains an aesthetically pleasing and stimulating mixture of historic and contemporary art and culture. Coupled with its stunning natural surrounds and vast expanses of National Parks, Hobart is the ideal base for the visitor who enjoys a peaceful and tranquil holiday escape.
Perhaps the city's most recognised urban precinct is Salamanca Place. Here you will find 19th-century waterfront warehouses dating back to the 1830s whaling days. Fortunately, nowadays they house trendy cafes, restaurants, galleries and art studios, the ideal place to wander or enjoy fine dining. Also, every Saturday the famous Salamanca Markets operate, where you can join the locals for a shopping experience with a difference.
Hobart is also famous for the Cadbury Factory situated in the suburb of Claremont. Here you can do a factory tour of the world's most famous chocolate producer and take home a goodies bag of delights.
