Hobart is the capital of Australia's largest island, Tasmania, affectionately known as the Apple Isle. It is located in the south-east of the state at the foot of the majestic Mount Wellington and on the banks of the mighty River Derwent. With its origins as one of Australia's earliest and largest colonies for British and Irish convicts, it contains an aesthetically pleasing and stimulating mixture of historic and contemporary art and culture. Perhaps the city's most recognised urban precinct is Salamanca Place. Here you will find 19th-century waterfront warehouses dating back to the 1830s whaling days.
