Tasmania, affectionately known as the Apple Isle, is an island located 240 kilometers south of mainland Victoria separated by the Bass Strait and is Australia's smallest state. It features some of the most decentralised and geographically diverse areas in the country and has a mild climate with warm summers and cool winters. Tasmania is recognised as the 'natural state', owing to its large and relatively unspoiled natural environments. It boasts the fact that more than a third of its landmass lies in natural reserves and otherwise wilderness areas, National Parks and World Heritage Listed Sites.
The capital city of Tasmania is Hobart, located in the south east. Here almost half the population lives in the greater urban areas. Other major cities include Launceston in the central north, as well and Burnie and Devonport in the northwest. Many wild and rugged places lie in between these townships, all waiting to be explored by you.
