Queenstown's leading Maori cultural experience..."Kia Ora!"
Nau mai haere mai ki tenei o to tatou nei whare whakaturanga - Welcome to our special place of Maori performing arts
Feel the spirit of Aotearoa - live Maori culture performance.
Kiwi Haka is an authentic and powerful spiritual journey of Maori culture and customs as told through song and dance. Set in an intimate theatre surrounded by decorations and mythical carved legends of the Wakatipu, at least 6-8 performers will be live on stage to share their culture.
During the show you will experience many of the following items, with the meaning and significance explained by the lead performer.
Powhiri (ceremonial welcome), consisting of the Wero (challenge), Karanga (call), Mihi (greeting), Nau Mai Haere Mai (action song). Following the formal welcome guests are invited to enjoy Maori culture Kiwi Haka style.
The performers will take guests through a journey demonstrating and explaining the use of the poi, Maori weaponry and haka (warrior motivation song), finishing with the grand finale - an entertainment item combining the use of all disciplines of Maori performing arts.
Poi - Traditionally used by the warriors to strengthen and supple the wrists for use of weapons such as patu. Nowadays it is used by the women to entertain, to retell history and to inspire our youth to hold on to our cultural knowledge passed down by our ancestors.
Taiaha: A traditional hand held close combat weapon carved in the form of an ancestor. Taiaha are very special treasures passed down from generation to generation. The tongue represents oratory skills, the eyes alert, and the feathers adorn the head to distract opponents.

The skyline gondola was pleasant but the time frame where cafe closes and the Kiwi Haka show was too long. Our show was around 815pm but the cafe was closed around 6pm. It'll be better if the cafe would be open at least a little longer.
